What is Ayurveda?

The age-old science of Ayurveda emerged in the Pre-Buddhist Era. The word 'Ayurveda' is made up of two words ‘Ayur’ that means life and ‘Veda’ means science.  Ayurveda, the science of life, is a part of the 'Atharvaveda', and is commonly practised in the Indian kitchens, and makes for an integral part of the Indian daily lifestyle. It visualises the ‘life’ of an individual as a complex of the body, mind and spirit, and health to be a balance amongst them.  

Ayurveda goes beyond being a medical science. It has a holistic approach towards treatment, and takes into account the whole body-mind-spirit complex of an individual to help remove the root cause of any given health issue. 

Ayurveda doctors practice 'Nadi Parikshan', a technique where they hold the wrist of the patient to listen to his or her heartbeat to understand the 'Doshic' imbalance within the body that led to the health problem. On the basis of diagnosis, they prescribe the treatment that is unique to the individual.

Ayurveda has manifold practises that include herbal remedies, massages, yoga, and rejuvenation therapies. It encompasses guidelines on how to live a healthy life, which focus on a healthy daily routine, diet, lifestyle choices and more. Its methods are directed towards unleashing the creative potential of each individual's unique body constitution. 

Ayurveda emphasises the maintenance of health & prevention of diseases through prescribed practises such as:

  1. Dinacharya, signifies a healthy daily routine that promotes self-care through different daily activities.These bring us in tune with nature, making us more self-aware. Optimum guidelines are laid down in Ayurveda to follow a healthy daily routine.
  1. Ritucharya is defined as a seasonal Ayurvedic regime that consists of diet, routine, and lifestyle changes with the change of season. Ritucharya enables our body and mind to cope with seasonal changes.
  1. Panchakarma is an Ayurvedic method to cleanse the body of all wastes and toxins. These include bio-purification methods to help eliminate waste from the body inside out and induce relaxation. It includes different kinds of treatments
  •  Vaman (To enable vomiting to help get rid of toxins)
  •  Virechan (To help enable cleansing of bowels) 
  •  Basti (To cleanse the rectum)
  • Nasya ( For purging out toxins from the head area)
  • Raktamokshan ( For cleaning of blood of certain areas in the body or the whole). 

All these treatments are designed specifically for different body types based on the Doshic body constitution and needs of an individual.  

  1. Rasayana— These signify rejuvenation therapies to boost immunity and develop healthy bodily tissues using herbal remedies.
  1. Achar Rasayana A part of the 'Rasayana' therapy that focuses on the code of conduct and behaviour to help with psychosomatic diseases. The term ‘Psychosomatic’ implies the connection of the body with the mind. 

In today's world, most health problems and lifestyle-related disorders are a result of psychosomatic disturbances. Treating psychosomatic disorders have always been included in Ayurveda. The science of life offers numerous treatments to resolve innumerable health problems and prescribes medication and treatment using this approach. For example, Yoga, defined as the ‘union’ of the body and mind, is a somatic practice that has existed in Ayurveda for ages. Practices like meditation and pranayama have also emerged from this, and are now widely being practised all over the world.
