Detox With the Panchakarma

Detox With the Panchakarma

This road to detoxification and healing through ancient practices takes us back to 5,000 years ago when Ayurvedic healing emerged. Rooted from the principle of maintaining the body's equilibrium through diet, herbal remedies, and yogic breathing techniques, these Ayurvedic practices are relevant and even more needed in today’s world. Their relevance is a testament to their preventive and curative powers.

Among these comprehensive ancient Ayurvedic treatments, Panchakarma is touted as one of the most effective detoxification therapies.

Panchakarma is coined from two Sanskrit words “Pancha” and “Karma”, meaning five actions. The term is well suited as Panchakarma is a five-step detoxification treatment that restores the natural healing capacity of the body and improves the quality of life. The treatment includes five natural methods of purgation or toxin elimination, detoxifying the body while balancing the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha within the body.

Why Choose Panchakarma

Lifestyle choices such as poor diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, and sedentary lifestyle take a toll on body, mind, and soul, disrupting the doshic balance. The quest for better health and improved quality of life has been riddled with pharmaceuticals and allopathic cures that help relieve only the symptoms and not necessarily cure diseases. However, in Ayurveda, treatments, and therapies are curated to eliminate the root cause of every disease.

Therefore, undergoing the Panchakarma treatment is essential as it lays down the foundation of our journey towards a cleansed body. Essentially, it restores our body to its purest form by eliminating the toxins from the body, boosts immunity, and supports our body's natural healing system to thrive. It allows our body to rebuild, restore and rejuvenate.

Five Steps to Restoration and Rejuvenation

The five steps that compose the classic Panchakarma detoxification are the following:

Poorva Karma

Poorva Karma is the preliminary procedure where the body and mind are prepared before the main Panchakarma treatment commences. This procedure involves the softening of tissues in order to facilitate the liquidation of toxins in our tissues, allowing them to be excreted through the digestive system. During this procedure the patient will undergo the following:
-  Pachan Karma Fasting and consuming Ayurvedic herbs to facilitate the digestion of clarified butter or ghee to dissolve fat-soluble toxins
- Snehan Karma – Taking increasing doses of medicated ghee to promote liquidation of fat-soluble toxins that are rooted deep within the tissues
- Swedan Karma – Deep Ayurvedic massages and steam bath to open body's channels to facilitate digestive tract movement

Pradhan Karma

This is the detox procedure, the 5-step therapy, Panchakarma. This procedure will entail the supervision of a certified Ayurvedic practitioner and is customized according to a patient’s body constitution, age, digestive health, immunity, curative needs, and other health factors. Following are the five karmas that help cleanse the body -

Vamanam:
During Vamanam, Ayurvedic doctors administer therapeutic induced vomiting to cleanse the respiratory tract and the upper gastrointestinal tract and help eliminate the toxins from the body tissues. Vamanam treatment is particularly suggested for individuals with Kapha-dominated conditions, such as weight gain, asthma, and hyperacidity.

Virechanam:
In Virechanam, purgation or disposal of toxins happens through the clearing of the bowels. A natural purgative is given to clear the lower gastric tract from the stomach to the excretory system. This treatment is prescribed for people dealing with diseases caused by pitta imbalance such as herpes zoster, jaundice, colitis, celiac infection, etc.

Basti:
In Basti, herbal oil enemas are administered to clear the rectal area of lipid waste. The treatment has huge advantages, particularly in convoluted and chronic diseases, and helps relieve Vata-dominated conditions, such as arthritis, piles, and constipation.

Nasya:
This treatment is extremely effective in clearing and purging the head area. At the beginning of the treatment, the head and shoulder areas are given a delicate massage, after which nasal drops are regulated in both the nostrils to cleanse the paranasal sinuses and respiratory tract. This process helps purify the head area and is effective in relieving cerebral pain, headaches, hair issues, insomnia, neurological disorders, sinusitis, and other respiratory ailments.

Raktamokshan:
This treatment is used for the purification of blood and is viable against ailments caused due to impure blood. It can either be specific to a particular area or can be administered to the whole body. Raktamokshan is especially recommended to individuals suffering from skin infections, such as psoriasis, dermatitis, pigmentation, etc.

Pashchat Karma
This phase of the therapy involves a post-therapeutic diet that is designed to enhance and re-establish the digestive fire. This post-therapy diet restores the digestive tract with the following procedures:

Samsarjana Karma – It is a post-detox food therapy that helps enhance the benefits of panchakarma.

Rasayan Adi Prayogam – A rejuvenating Rasayan therapy that helps enhance natural immunity and well-being. This immunity booster therapy also strengthens Ojas, increases virility, promotes good memory and glowing skin, and rejuvenates the senses.

Shaman Chikitsa – A therapy that involves teaching practices to lead an Ayurvedic lifestyle and herbal remedies to induce calm.

When rejuvenating treatments like Panchakarma, are complemented with lifestyle changes, dietary changes, and healing practices such as meditation and yoga, one achieves harmony of mind, body, and soul. Panchakarma offers a holistic experience in healing and rejuvenation. It is the physical catalyst that heals our body from inside and out, connects us with our innate emotions, and helps us lead a fuller, healthier life.
